Introduction to Naturopathy

Naturopathy - New Course

This new course has been specially written by one of our Kevala course writers to provide you with an over view of this fascinating holistic subject. This is one of our new personal-development short courses. No previous experience is required before enrolling.

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopaths believe that the symptoms of ill health are the body’s way of trying to heal itself. If you try to suppress these symptoms, you hamper the body’s healing action. Instead, it’s better to use appropriate means to support what the body is doing. In today’s society there is almost an acceptance that feeling generally unwell and sluggish is normal – you may not be seriously ill but neither are you full of the joys of spring! People who are chronically unwell lose their awareness of true health. Naturopaths believe that health is the feeling of fulfilment and vitality.

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of healing – a philosophy, science, art and practice that aims to promote health by stimulating and supporting the body’s inherent ability to restore harmony and balance. There are three basic principles:

An individual has the power to heal him or herself through internal vitality and intelligence. The vital force is the foundation of naturopathic philosophy.

Naturopathic medicine is a holistic approach to health i.e. diseases affect the whole person – mind, body and spirit and not just an isolated organ or system of the body. The naturopath searches for causes at many levels and attempts to eliminate the fundamental cause of illness.

Disease is a manifestation of the vital force; a naturopath searches for causes at many levels and attempts to eliminate the fundamental root of illness, which could be:

Chemical – an imbalance in the chemistry of the body’s fluids due to dietary deficiency or dietary excesses, retention of waste products due to inefficient functioning of the eliminatory organs, or poor circulation of body fluids

Mechanical – i.e. muscular tensions, strained ligaments, stiff joints, poor posture due to occupational factors, as well as spinal misalignments, leading to an interference in the functioning of the nervous system and the muscular-skeletal system generally.

Psychological – i.e. impaired function induced by stress, which may be due to worries and upsets in personal and domestic life and/or anxieties and pressures at work

To achieve these aims, a naturopath may use a number of forms of therapy; The Kevala Centre course will give you an insight into some of them.
