Yoga in Bali

By Rayner Johnston

After working for six months as an English teacher in Jakarta, the polluted capital city of Indonesia; I decided to resign from my job. In Jakarta I learned shaolin kung fu from an old Chinese man in the local vihara (Buddhist temple) and in return I taught the Buddhists yoga, in the Indonesian language.

After leaving Jakarta I moved to Bali and was lucky enough to be told about a place called Balispirit. Balispirit employs yoga teachers, to teach yoga in various yoga studios in and around Ubud (a town close to the mountains). I am studying for a yoga teachers diploma with the Kevala centre. I met the lovely woman called Megwho runs Balispirit, she has lived in Bali for many years and is married with a child, to a Balinese man. I told her I do not yet have a qualification in yoga teaching, but have been practising alone for five years and she allowed me to teach on a donation basis, in her lovely studio.

I feel so lucky to have gained this experience and have been given much positive feedback from all of my students. Through teaching yoga I find that after a class I receive so much positive energy from everyone and feel so much love and compassion for the world. I feel blessed and truly believe this luck has come to me through meditation, offering my light and love and thanking nature for life. If you would like information about balispirit, look on the website: Balispirit.com
